Praying for Unreached Peoples

Today, there are over 7,000 unreached people groups. That means that there are almost 3 billion people in the world who have have little or no access to the gospel. Those numbers are staggering to me! Especially when I consider that each day I pass three other churches on my three mile commute to my church.

The most important thing each one of us can do toward reaching the billions of unreached peoples is pray. That may sound trite, but I believe it is what Scripture calls us to do. Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.” So what is Jesus’ solution? “Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”(Matthew 9:37-38, emphasis mine) We know God is calling people from every tribe, tongue, and people to himself but someone must go and share the gospel. And, we all must pray for God to raise up believers and laborers to go.

There are several tools available to help guide prayer for the nations. In the past I have used Operation World which is a great tool and gives much information about each country and particular ways to pray for them. This past year I signed up to receive the “Unreached People of the Day” e-mail from Joshua Project. This daily e-mail provides good information about each people group and also gives particular reasons to pray. These are great tools and I commend them to you. I am sure there are others as well.

This year, I wanted to try something a little different. I wanted to pray for an unreached people group for a week at a time. Inspired by Timmy Brister’s Philippians Memory Moleskine, I created a 30 Weeks of Prayer for Unreached Peoples Moleskine. I selected 30 unreached people groups based on several factors (explained in the file below). Its nothing fancy, but I hope it will be a good, portable tool to help me be faithful in praying for unreached peoples.

If you are interested in praying along with me, here is a link to the PDF: 30 Weeks of Prayer for Unreached Peoples Moleskine. All the directions on how to set it up are included in the file. I used the Cahier Moleskine journal but index cards or something similar would work as well.

Leave a comment if you are hoping to give it a try or if you have any suggestions. Most importantly, let’s be faithful to pray for the gospel to spread to all peoples.
